Grounded research. Honest limits.

Grounded legal research

NOMOS retrieves from licensed legislation knowledge bases for jurisdictions we currently support. Answers are built from retrieved excerpts. When retrieval cannot find an on-point source, NOMOS says so instead of inventing statutory content.

Source transparency

Product workflows separate NOMOS analysis from Sources. Source titles and portions (for example Act name and section) are shown so you can open and verify the underlying text.

Legal data approach

NOMOS does not scrape SAFLII for production RAG. Judgment corpora remain off until provenance and licensing are clear. Commercial legislation access is via licensed providers.

Responsible AI

NOMOS is research assistance, not a lawyer and not a court. Prefer language such as “potential issue identified” and “area requiring further review” unless a conclusion is clearly supported by retrieved material.

Privacy

Do not upload privileged or highly sensitive materials unless your organisation has approved the workflow. See Privacy.

Security approach — current state

NOMOS is served over HTTPS on Google Cloud Run. Early-access hardening includes rate limiting, locked CORS, input validation, and sanitized error responses. The following are still open:

  • Public product APIs are reachable without user login (Microsoft Entra SSO planned)
  • Full audit logging and Secret Manager migration for all environments are planned
  • Formal certifications (SOC 2 / ISO) are not claimed

NOMOS does not currently claim SOC 2, ISO 27001, or other formal security certifications.

Coverage

South Africa is live against licensed national, provincial and municipal legislation.

The United Kingdom is live against UK Public General Acts, 1996-2024 from legislation.gov.uk (Open Government Licence v3.0). It does not include statutory instruments or Scotland / Wales / Northern Ireland legislation.

The United States is live against the 2024 United States Code titles from GovInfo (U.S. government work). It does not include the Code of Federal Regulations, the Federal Register, or earlier US Code years. US answers disclose that limit.

Canada is live against English consolidated federal Acts from the Department of Justice official XML (Open Government Licence – Canada). It does not include regulations, French texts, annual statutes, or provincial legislation.

Australia is live against in-force principal Commonwealth Acts (current compilations) and in-force principal Commonwealth Regulations from legislation.gov.au (CC BY 4.0). It does not include amending Acts, state or territory law, or the full instrument register. Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana are not live.

Limitations

Retrieval can miss the right section. Always verify against the full Act. NOMOS for Microsoft Word requires supported Microsoft 365 configurations and sideload/admin deployment.
